When Rubbish in the Streets Drives You Crazy

Whenever I am in a bad mood, I start cleaning. Orderliness and a clean space serve to calm me. It is as if the decluttering of my living space triggers a decluttering of my worries and thoughts. It might sound trivial, but the same is true for the outdoors. Neat and tidy streets are a big factor that determines whether you feel good about the area you live in. If your street is littered with papers, smudgy from dried-up liquids or sticky from left food items – you might not notice it day to day, but the presence of these things is a unhygienic as it is grating on the nerves. I'm somewhat soothed if I hear the sound of one of those diesel pressure washers outside my house though....and yet, I still feel - why do we rely on the council and private companies to clean up after us? In summer, rubbish disintegrates more quickly and can leave a very unpleasant smell in the streets, especially in the afternoon of a hot day. In winter, the litter attracts mice and rats in search for food. On more than one occasion I have been startled by a rat crossing the street late in the evening. All in all, rubbish in the streets is more than just an issue for overly neat people. It is about health as much as it is about a pleasant living environment.
