Results don't lie. It doesn't matter how well known your business is in town or how many years you've been serving the same community. If your product or service does not have a prominent presence online, then you might as well shutter your doors now. I learned the hard way, after I resisted getting involved in setting up a website. I thought I knew everything there was to know about marketing, since I've been in the same location for years and have personal relationships with all my customers. But when a competitor set up shop about a half-mile away, I noticed a marked decrease in traffic, which resulted in correspondingly low sales. My competitor was a young, business-savvy graduate of a marketing program that taught him all the NEW rules, which included making sure you were appealing to the new, technology-focused consumer. He had a web site, a Facebook page, a Twitter account and was connected through Linked In and several other special-interest Internet groups. Plus, he had an online store. I thought "how dare he" invade my territory! However, I knew that I still had the advantage of age, experience and product and service know-how, so I asked for recommendations about becoming a player in the online store wars. Sixteen months later, I'm happy to say that I'm doing fantastic. My sales have doubled and I'm now selling to customers across the country as well as across the street. And my competitor? He's still in business, but we are now collaborating on some joint ideas. I'm a Twitterer and Facebooker and I'm also doing Diggs. Life is good! |

In my younger years, I taught myself how to code in html and PHP. This led to the creation of my own website along with some friends I had met on a message board online pertaining to sports. At first this venture was just for personal fun but then we decided to expand the scope and try to bring in new members. Our primary method of doing so was related to creating banner ads and finding similar smaller sites looking to expand and contact the administrator to discuss a banner swap deal where we each displayed the other’s ad for a given period of time on our sites. This was relatively effective but it created the issue of having the same audience on two similar sites intertwining. I was always looking at ways to market my site - I sought email marketing advice as well as reading SEO tips. Another way we tried to market the website was through various message boards and chat rooms related directly to the sports theme of our site. This was also moderately effective and ultimately led to our site having several hundred unique visitors per week after a couple months of operation. |

There's been this waxing and waning of public opinion (or at least web developer opinion) when it comes to Flash. In the late 90s, it was the bees knees. Then it got unpopular because it was search engine unfriendly and lacked usability. Now it's made another comeback, and this time in a much more sensible way. Instead of those Flash-only sites, now we see Flash used as elements of a page - maybe a video (e.g. look at a typical youtube page), or a slideshow. That means you get the best of both worlds - the multimedia of Flash with the search engine friendliness and usability of HTML. The other day when we were outside our dormitories talking with friends, we got approached with students who had questionnaires. This was a very normal thing in universities because we are always given research papers and we are required to use a research style to get the work done and many students opted for questionnaires because they had better results. These were business major students who were asking us why online marketing, basically seo was more preferable than the other old ways of marketing. We told them that many young people rarely read newspapers because they had the equivalent online. They asked us why we read the online newspapers instead of the ones in print and we told them that we were constantly on the internet and that is why reading them online sounded better than reading the actual newspaper. We also added that online activities helped us multitask. We could browse many pages at once and still be able to read the paper. That is something that we could not do with an actual newspaper. |

Computer technology is already here with us. It has changed our lifestyle for good. We no longer work effectively without computers. The technology is just getting advanced everyday, more and more devices are being invented so that we can use. Everyone is just embracing these new devices that are being invented by the scientists cause they are making our lives to be more interesting to live. Though at some point ,they are making us lose jobs cause what was used to be done by hand can now be done by the machine that are being invented. The machines can do work which can be done by so many people and very fast and accurate. Many are being laid off from work due to such reasons. When one is given an assignment to do so that they can present to the company, they normally do it using the computers. They us the search engines cause hey are very fast especially the Google search. You simply place your question in the search box and it will bring the results and do not be caught between seo vs adwords. Once we get connected things become easier for us cause everything that is done nowadays is done through the internet. I am not used to having a smart phone. I am not the type of person who is highly obsessed by technology. According to be, I think technology can be morally degrading. My cousins are addicted to the internet and some of the things that they do on the internet are morally questionable. What makes it easier for them is the fact that they have smart phones that make it easier for them to indulge in activities that are not right. I knew that their phones were the main cause of their weird behaviors, but I did not know how it worked. What I knew is that they could access internet very easily and they did not even have to use their computers to get in to their phones. Most of them watched videos via their phones. They said the advantage of having a phone like the blackberry curve is the fact that there are so many features that one can choose from. Though they said that someone like me would need the instruction manual blackberry curve. That is because it had so many features in that I would need to be familiarized with the computer with the help of the manual. |

A few years ago when I joined Facebook, I loved it. It was a great way to see what my friends were up to and keep in contact with people that I didn’t see often. I even got addicted to Farmville, and changing my profile page with various new Facebook banners.
But then they started allowing everyone to join, not just college students and graduates. After that, it all went downhill. Now it is full of middle and high school kids and family members, so I can’t post all of the things I don’t want them to see without going through the trouble of applying special privacy settings. Applications were fun at first, but now I am sick of seeing that someone sent me a request on Farmville. There have been so many updates and changes to Facebook that I can’t stand to use it anymore. I downloaded the Facebook Ipod application, and set it up to alert me if I get a message. Other than that, I never look at it anymore. They made too many changes trying to fix what was fine to begin with, and that lost my interest. |
