Dreaming of Transforming My Home with My Hands, My Way

posted on 6 February 2012

My husband and I built our beautiful family home around two years ago. From buying in plumbing and heating supplies to buying other supplies like hard and softwoods, we've spent a lot and worked hard on our house. When we had our local draftsman go through our plans, we truly believed we had thought of everything. That changes as your family grows and your needs themselves change. I am now planning to do some improvements myself so it has my unique touch. I’d like to change the carpets, paint some walls, even put a sky light in to brighten up our main living space. My husband wants in on this and will be adding a raised seating area in our small home theatre room to improve the acoustics where we are seated. I love getting my hands dirty and will probably do some work outside covering up under our verandah stair case so the dogs can’t get in there anymore. I might even go as far as building a wooden raised garden bed along our fence line to plant some shrubs. They aren’t big changes but I am looking forward to the satisfaction of completing the work myself and enjoying our home even more.

It's a Great Old House But, Oh, So Cold in the Winter

posted on 25 January 2012

I love my old, quirky house with all its character. Great woodwork and wood floors, three whole floors of living apace and big old windows. Best of all, the house has a fantastic view of the river from many of the rooms, so all day and night I can watch the boat traffic and the lovely old bridge that is lit at night. But, as I stand in my kitchen, with its butterfly table and chair - and its fantastic view and look at the thermometer on the wall on a cold winter day, it's lucky to read in the high 50s! So, what I'd love to do to make the house warmer is add a beautiful, antique wood cook stove in the kitchen and a small soapstone and cast iron one in the parlor. This, of course, would require a lot of chimney work and some rearranging of various elements in both rooms to make it work. In addition, I would love to have the antique windows restored. No ugly new replacement windows that have a limited lifetime for me. I love my old six-over-six windows, but would certainly like it if they were a little more snug. Even with storm windows I can still hear the wind howling on a windy day. Perhaps a little insulation might be a good idea too!

Your firm will be accepted in the market if your work genuinely

posted on 12 December 2011

In the choice of careers that are done today, many people have resorted to electrical work probably because of the interest that they find in them and also the fact that there is usually a good pay involved in the work. But this you would only enjoy if you are able to appreciate your kind of work and work with it genuinely to earn you the good amount of cash that many enjoy it for. But again, the pay may depend on the particular firm that you are working on such that if you are working on that which does not have a very good market, you may end up earning quite less and the contrary may be the case if you are working on a firm that has already gained fame in the market. And for the electricians Berkshire, they have since made a good name in the market considering the fact that they know how to provide the customers needs to their satisfaction. They are even better placed because of the competent electricians who are the only once employed in the firms. For such, they have been able to earn their customers trust and maintain them even for the future services.

Electronic Pest Control Products Have Just One Problem

posted on 2 December 2011

I live in a mobile home, which has lots of spaces for little critters, such as rodents to get in. To make things worse, on top of this issue I also live next to the woods. Mice city! I've tried everything to keep the mice out. I've tried drier sheet, peppermint, snaptraps, new-fangled electric mouse "zappers," and I've even tried feeding the local cats in the area (of which there are many.) Nothing worked. Mice are not like flies - a fly zapper seems to busily kill flies all day long. So with mice, being at my wits end, I though I'd try something that I swore I would never try in my life: an 'as seen on TV' electronic mouse repellent infomercial product. The premise sounds great. Either the noise travels through your electric cords, or it makes a beeping sound that only mice can hear which drives them nuts, and sends them packing. Then I got the package. It read, 'does not work through walls' - exactly where the mice were! Well I tried it out anyways, and surprise surprise: it didn't work. The moral of the story: don't buy dubious looking products off the TV that sound too good to be true. Especially if you're at your wit's end about a mouse problem.

Flies Don't Flee Without a Fight!

posted on 10 November 2011

I spent hours online pointing and clicking my way through page after page of blogs and forums and advertisements trying to find a way to rid my home of the summer flies that found their way into my once peaceful home - I looked at everything, from flyscreen mesh to fly curtains. They tormented us. No crumb was safe, not even the food on our forks. I tried candles and bug spray and sticky fly paper to no avail. I think they liked the candles, the bug spray just drove us from our home in search of fresh air and the fly paper, while it did catch a few of the flying pests was just too disgusting to live with. I was at my wits end when my youngest son decided to take up the fight. He sat down in front of the computer and no less than five minutes later was in the kitchen gathering ingredients. He made up a mixture of apple cider vinegar and dish soap in a small glass bowl he took a bit of plastic wrap to cover it and poked a few holes in the top of it. He made up several of these bowls and set them around the house. Within an hour or so there were flies floating in the bowls! They were attracted to the contents and once they made their way under the plastic wrap they simply could not find their way out. It wasn’t long before we were dumping the fly filled traps down the commode and making more. We sat them outside on the porch in hopes of catching them before they tried to invade and it actually worked fairly well. Next summer we’ll be ready for them.

DIY: Extending Over Our Drive

posted on 19 October 2011

If I had the budget and the local council would grant planning permission I would extend over the existing driveway at 1st floor level and create two extra bedrooms. This would turn our two bed house into a four bed and would hopefully increase its value. In order to create the extra space upstairs I believe there would need to be some re-modelling downstairs such as moving the existing stairs as they currently point away from the drive so that would make access to the new rooms an issue. I might even give them new stair parts while I'm at it. I'd also like to swap the lounge and kitchen around as the lounge (where we spend most of our time) is on the front of the house which is on a main road so it makes more sense to have that to the rear of the property over looking the garden. The main issue with these changes is cost as they are fairly expensive projects to undertake.

Of Mice and Men: the Battle for the Attic

posted on 14 October 2011

When I lived as a student we had mice. I'd previously only had to deal with fleas, and that was an easy pest to deal with using flea powders. Mice? Another problem altogether. I lived in a run down one bedroom ground floor flat just behind an empty waste land. The land was totally overgrown and we had major infestations as a result. The worst were the giant spiders and the mice. Being a vegetarian student and quite idealistic at the time I bought some 'mice friendly' mouse traps. They didn't work. We caught no mice. The mice got noisier, and louder until it became impossible to sleep at night. You could hear them running up and down the floorboards, it was very unpleasant. After a couple of weeks my partner bought some proper poison and put it down. He didn't tell me because he thought I would be upset. A few weeks later we noticed a funky smell coming from the hatch in the ceiling, my mum was visiting and went up to have a look. She opened the hatch and maggots rained down on her head. The poison had worked alright. Yuk! I do not miss that house. Advice to anyone considering a mouse friendly mouse trap: do not bother, they do not work.

How felt company gives its customers the best quality of services

A well elaborated system is easy to understand and follow through. It is a system that is not hard to get along with and there will be no incidences of misunderstandings. When services are offered in a clear manner, it is possible to get what is going on and how it is done. This clear way of doing things is undertaken by the felt roofing systems. These systems are detailed with all the information that a user would want. The info makes the user get what is going on and how it goes down. The people providing the services will only clarify the areas that the users don't understand. The company providing the felt roofing services has a customer care desk where users get helped with the roofing details and other services. It is an easy way to reach the clients and the company also gets closer to its users this way. Through the views and complains that the customer care desk collect, the company gets to know the way forward and how to give their clients what they want.

Take Control of Your Environment to Prevent Damage from Pests

posted on 17 September 2011

There’s more to pest control than keeping a clean house. You also have to be proactive and use preventive measures to ensure that ants, termites and other annoying critters don’t take over your premises, leaving droppings and doing expensive damage. From door fly screens to sprays, there's many weapons available to defeat the enemy. Every home dweller should make it a point to check their home regularly for signs of pests and then take action to eliminate the problem. You should look under kitchen and bathroom sinks, along the outside foundation of your home, in the basement and attic, and behind appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers. If you see anything suspicious, go to your local home improvement store and pick up some bug spray or ant traps. If there is evidence of termites, you’ll need to call a professional exterminator to get rid of these nasty bugs, since they can damage the integrity of your home. My experience with termites was not very pleasant, but working with an experienced contractor, I was able to get rid of the problem in three days. Although it was an inconvenient process, it did give me peace of mind that my home was not being quietly eaten by these insidious bugs.

Showing What More John Can Offer

posted on 8 September 2011

John is not really a singer but he is very visible on TV these days. That's because he has two regular TV shows in his home network. No one could question his ability as an actor, with all the awards he has received from various award giving bodies. John is also a responsible father to his five children. Despite their separation, John has maintained a civil relationship with his ex wife. This is how John wants it to be because they have children and they both want to be present in their children's lives even after they part ways. As a result, their children grew up to be quite okay. Everyone is doing well in school and they are well adjusted social beings. Credit goes both to their mom and dad. Going back to John, while he is an ace performer on TV, unknown to many, John is also very well versed when it comes to houses and how they are built. In fact, just the other day, he was discussing about single ply roofing with the crew in his set. It looks like there is so much more John can offer, huh.

Rabbits, Gophers and Bugs can Destroy Flowers and Vegetable Gardens

posted on 1 September 2011

This summer I determined I would have the perfect garden, so I planned carefully and planted my vegetables in neat rows after preparing the soil well. I also planned a new flower garden in the part of my yard near the road, to enhance the curb appeal of my property. I watched for new seedlings to appear, but found they were eaten nearly as fast as they popped up. My newly planted flowers were also eaten down to the stem, and died as a result. We were talking about a serious pest problem here. Far more serious than the flies I easily dealt with last summer with some window fly screens. I put up a fence around the vegetable garden, but found most of the plants were still being nipped to the ground. I finally solved the problem by putting empty plastic jugs over each plant during the night, and removing them during the day. I ended up with only five tomato plants and six bean plants, so my perfect garden is far from perfect, but I did learn how to defeat the theives and next year will be more prepared.

Storage for Shoes – Solutions to Avoid Losing Matching Pairs

posted on 30 August 2011

For some people, having more than two or three pairs of shoes is not a luxury but rather a necessity called for by their active and very social lifestyle. They need to have a pair of shoes for different occasions and activities that they are involved with. They need a pair for jogging and another for going to parties and yet another one for having leisure walks in the park. This should not be surprising at all in our modern world and thus, there is also a need for solutions to problems involving strorage for shoes. In the past, when it was enough to have just one pair of shoes, people just put their shoes anywhere they find themselves taking them off. They could be in the bedroom and put their shoes under the bed or they could be in the living room, resting in the sofa and therefore they would just stow their shoes under it. The wonderful thing is that they were able to find them the next day, although that is because they had only one pair of shoes. But what if they had more than a dozen pairs? Then just finding the matching pair really becomes a problem. The only solution is to put them all in one place, such as the kind of shoe storage furniture or organizers you can buy today.

The Advantages I See With Using Solar Panels

posted on 29 August 2011

Harnassing solar energy via solar panels is one of the most environmentaly friendly forms of producing energy. They do not produce any kind of sound or residue so the impact to the environment is minimum. Every 20kW generated with solar energy avoids the emission of 10kg of CO2 a year. Another important aspect is that solar energy is a resource that never runs out and it doesn't ruin the soil or pollute the air. If you implement solar energy in your home your electricity bills for sure will be reduced, and this means that solar energy will pay for itself and even adds value to your property if you want to sell up. Some governments give tax reductions to people who implement solar energy in their house. Clean energy is the future of energy, and we should think about our environment and help to avoid CO2 emissions. Every element that produces clean energy has little or no CO2 emissions.

And Now the Air Conditioner Actually Works

posted on 26 August 2011

If you have ever lived in a mobile home you know that when it’s hot it’s hot and when it’s cold it’s cold. I do remember living in a bricks and mortar home and installing hardwood flooring to help keep the temperatures cooler - no such options in a mobile home! I live in the heart of Texas and the summers are usually brutal so you definitely need your air conditioner. My air conditioner was working perfectly fine but there was water leaking from the unit into the floor causing a large amount of water to collect in and around the unit. You guessed it I had to turn it off to try and figure out what was causing this problem. Since I am a woman most people might think that by this time I really should be calling a plumber, but the last time this happened it was because the plumber left something off which I thought was the case in this situation. This situation was not the same. After looking at the pvc pipe coming from the unit through the floor to the outside and continued shaking with little to no result I decided to pour vinegar and baking soda through the pipe to clean it. The pipe was clean but there appeared to be something blocking the water from flowing out. Now it was time for me to play super hero, I went under the house and took apart the pvc pipe to find what looked like a rock lodged in the joint. After getting this out and reconnecting it the water no longer puddled in the floor. I was shocked and amazed to be able to fix the water leak from my ac unit. When push comes to shove we make it happen.

The Internet Is Full of Home and Garden Ideas

posted on 25 July 2011

The internet has inspired me to improve my home and garden. There's no end of useful tips and pointers online - from blogs dedicated to gardening, to home and garden directories, to e-commerce sites, we're spoilt these days with the amount of information at our disposal to help us convert our homes from drab to fab. My advice is to give your home and garden an "audit" - make a priority list of jobs that need doing. Some you can do on your own without buying anything, some you'll need to visit the local garden centre or DIY shop. Next up, have a look online and see if other people are in a similar position to you in regards to chores that need doing. You may save a lot of trouble and time by learning from others' mistakes, and so online research is vital before you actually embark on a project.

My Elegant Husband’s Encounter with an Engine and Air Compressors

posted on 14 July 2011

I was surprised because I didn’t see my husband anywhere in the house when I woke up this morning. I was wondering where he was when I heard sounds of air compressors from the garage. I immediately went to see what it was and it was funny to see my husband trying to fix an engine of sort while two compressors were turned on. I just observed him for a bit before I let him notice that I was there because it is fun seeing my usually well-dressed, elegant, manager husband wearing sweatpants and dirty shirt while trying to do something that I don’t think he has any idea over. It was refreshing to see him laid back like that because he is usually so high strung that even I cannot help but walk on eggshells when he is around, just like his secretary and other subordinates. When it was obvious that he was in another world, I casually let out a sound just so he knows I was watching, when he noticed, I could readily tell that he was embarrassed to be caught in such a situation.

Choosing the Right Outdoor Fireplace Pits

posted on 28 June 2011

When it’s about buying an outdoor fireplace for your outdoor living area or your backyard, the one thing you should always put first is safety. While most designs have been tried and tested to be considered safe, there are still others which are not and some are still safer than the others. Presently the most popular outdoor fireplace designs you can find are the chimineas and the outdoor fireplace pits. While these top two designs provide a warm and cozy ambiance, there are costs and benefits associated with each of them. Chimineas doesn’t produce a lot of smoke or heat as much as the fireplace pits. This is because it is similar to your indoor fireplace which has an opening which cleanly burns fuel. On the other hand, fireplace pits are open fireplaces which can be compared to a ring of heated rocks. And while they sometimes have chimneys, they have a wide opening which can make it harder to control the heat and fire.
