How I Tended to My First House's Garden

posted on 27 October 2011

So I have just moved out of my dad's house and on my own, well sort of. I'm living with my boyfriend and in this old house in the basement. It's a large size for low rent, so we stay but the garden is absolutley hideous. It's brown and littered with ugly weeds there's never any flowers or real nice colors so its kind of depressing to look at. I remember my grandma used to have this wonderful garden when I was young it had so many tall trees and colors and flowers of all kinds it was like steping into a fairty tale I loved it. I would use any excuse to go over there just to see it. I wish my garden was like that. I think my boyfriend and I will need to don some overalls and get out there (in the inclement weather) and sort it out!

The Shocking Mess My kids Left Behind

posted on 17 July 2011

Nothing compares to the shocking mess my kids and their friends made when left unattended a few years ago during a party. I've worked for tank cleaning services in my time, and this is up there with the toughest jobs I've had to do professionally. My adult friends and I were downstairs catching up, laughing, talking and eating. We were relieved to be free of our children, ages three through nine, who were upstairs and by all accounts "entertaining themselves." Since there was no noise or trouble we presumed everything was okay. At the end of the evening we started gathering the kids to go home. What we found upstairs almost defies description. I cannot fathom how 4 kids can make such a huge mess in so little time. Lipstick and face powder smeared all over furniture, crayons melted on hot radiators, shaving cream completely emptied into the sink, soap and paint smeared on the walls, the bedspread, the furniture, and the windows. They had literally dumped out and emptied drawers ofknick-knacks and clothing, blended it all together on the floor, and left it in a tangled pile. The melted crayons had dripped onto the hardwood floor and gotten on the clothing. The worst part was, we couldn't even make the kids clean it up, as it was beyond their capability. We never got all the crayon off the floor, nor all the lipstick and makeup off the clothing. It was the biggest mess I've ever seen.

If I Only Had Another Bathroom in the House

posted on 20 May 2011

I have plans to change my house that involve DIY, but I also have a phobia to DIY too. When I think of DIY, I think of all that difficulty - using a masonry saw or other tools that I have no confidence with. And yet, such a phobia does not quell my desire to make changes to my house! Having said that, there is really only one thing I think I would like to change about my house, and that would be to add another bathroom. Some of the bathrooms I see today on HG TV show people who must have double sinks in their bathroom which is probably the size of my current bedroom. My current bathroom might hold three people at once, but only if one happens to be standing on top of the commode. I have one bathroom in my house with seven people. At least we have learned patience. I don’t need anything fancy and I don’t need double sinks, but I sure would love to be able to call it mine and only mine. I am the mother, after all, and I think I have qualified for this little perk. I would even go so far as to allowing my washer and dryer to be put in there so I didn’t have to haul everything to the basement for that activity, but I digress. I want a second bathroom!

When Rubbish in the Streets Drives You Crazy

posted on 12 April 2011

Whenever I am in a bad mood, I start cleaning. Orderliness and a clean space serve to calm me. It is as if the decluttering of my living space triggers a decluttering of my worries and thoughts. It might sound trivial, but the same is true for the outdoors. Neat and tidy streets are a big factor that determines whether you feel good about the area you live in. If your street is littered with papers, smudgy from dried-up liquids or sticky from left food items – you might not notice it day to day, but the presence of these things is a unhygienic as it is grating on the nerves. I'm somewhat soothed if I hear the sound of one of those diesel pressure washers outside my house though....and yet, I still feel - why do we rely on the council and private companies to clean up after us? In summer, rubbish disintegrates more quickly and can leave a very unpleasant smell in the streets, especially in the afternoon of a hot day. In winter, the litter attracts mice and rats in search for food. On more than one occasion I have been startled by a rat crossing the street late in the evening. All in all, rubbish in the streets is more than just an issue for overly neat people. It is about health as much as it is about a pleasant living environment.

The Historical Restoration of Our Local Theatre

posted on 12 February 2011

It was so nice to hear that the council will spend money on the historical restoration of our local theatre. While many people see entertainment as playing with their Nintendo Wii or going to the Multiplex cinema 3 miles out of town, the older forms of entertainment are just as much fun and even timeless. Going to the theatre is a wonderful night out - to see a play performed right in front of you - there's no substitute for that. The theatre is for everyone - from youngsters watching pantomimes - to young adults watching their contemporaries perform stories about their day-to-day lives. Not only is it about plays - the theatre can be used for live comedy acts and bands too. I think that once the theatre has been renovated, people will take a renewed interest in the old building and I'm hoping it might revive the town.

Check out the CNBC Website for Your Investing News

I'm online a lot as a web developer. I develop e-commerce sites that help my customers sell anything from velcro to cushion covers to canvas art prints. When I'm not developing, my favorite website for the work and money side of my life is CNBC's website. It is a perfect compliment to CNBC television. One of the things I like about it is the way it is designed and laid out. Once you get used to it, you know exactly where to go to get the information you are seeking. Personally, in conjunction with my stock market investing and trading, I review their website several times a day. At the top are the major headlines of the day. This is where I go to find out what is wrong if the market suddenly plunges. I can usually find an answer there. There are also boxes that feature each of the main trading and investing related television shows they have on during the day and evening. If you happen to miss one of these shows, the boxes will give you a chance to see the primary topics they discussed and read articles recapping those issues. Along the top are drop down menus that will take you to specific items that may be important for your trading and investing. I am constantly checking commodity, currency, and futures quotes. This is especially true after-hours and throughout the night and early morning. Sometimes there is not much you can do but hold on for the next day, but at least you are not in the dark with the CNBC website.
